Frequently asked questions

Answers about accounts, systems, AI, data and using Kompil Code.

Getting started

Which systems does Kompil Code run on?

Today, Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). The desktop app for macOS and Linux is marked “coming soon” on the download page. The web version opens in the browser to edit and chat.

Do I need an account?

Yes. The desktop app asks you to sign in with your account, by email. Creating an account is free.

Is the app in English?

The Kompil app interface is in Portuguese (Brazil). This site is available in English and in Portuguese.

What's the difference between the app and the web?

The web is for editing and chatting from anywhere: the collaborative editor, messages and the cloud terminal. The desktop app is the full Kompil: AI agent, Git, history, extensions, local terminal, saving to your machine and the developer network.

How do I update?

It updates itself: the app downloads the new version in the background and shows Update on the title bar; one click installs it.

How do I check that the installer is legitimate?

On the Download page, when you choose your system, the installer's SHA-256 and the command to check it appear. Run the command on the file you downloaded: if the result is different, don't install it.

AI

Which AIs can I use?

In the agent, with your own key: Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Groq, DeepSeek, Mistral, xAI, Ollama on your own computer or any service compatible with the OpenAI API. There are also the Claude extension (with the official Claude Code) and GitHub Copilot (suggestions and Copilot Chat).

Does my AI key go to Kompil Code's servers?

No. The key stays encrypted in this computer's system vault and is only used to talk directly to the provider you chose.

How much will the AI cost me?

Usage is billed by the provider, on your account. In Kompil you set a monthly dollar limit for each AI account: at 80% you get a warning; at the limit, the agent stops.

Can the AI change the project without me seeing?

No. Every edit shows the diff and every command appears before it runs, with Allow, Always in this conversation, Deny or Deny and explain. There is also Plan only mode, where nothing changes.

Can I use my Claude Pro or Max subscription?

In the Claude panel, yes: it is the official Claude Code extension, which signs in with your Anthropic account. Kompil's own chat and agent use an API key, because Anthropic doesn't allow third-party apps to use subscription sign-in.

Projects and data

Does it work offline?

Yes, with the project saved on your computer: you edit offline and everything syncs when the connection comes back. Chat, AI and the cloud wait for the network.

Who can see my code?

Only the people you invite to the project, each with a role: owner, editor, viewer and more. The .env file only reaches people with the “View .env” permission, and viewers can't use AI or the terminal, or copy the code.

Is my data protected?

Messages, code, files and images are stored encrypted. Your account can have two-step verification, and repeated wrong passwords pause access.

Can I run several projects at once?

Yes. In the desktop app, each project runs with its own Live Server and its own container, each on its own port, and the Runs panel on the title bar shows everything that's running.

Is the cloud terminal free?

The local terminal, on your machine, is. The cloud environment, in a container of your own, is part of the Business and Enterprise plans.

Extensions

Do my VS Code extensions work?

Yes. The embedded VS Code engine runs Open VSX extensions, and the ones you already have in VS Code or Cursor on this computer work in Kompil. Themes and snippets go to your account too.

Why isn't Microsoft's marketplace there?

Microsoft's marketplace can only be used by the official VS Code. Kompil uses Open VSX, the open extension catalog.
